Questions and Answers from Matthew Burkett

Q. When did you first begin fly fishing?

A.  When I was 5 years old. When I was 4 years old, I would ride on my father’s shoulders as he waded through the river. He would set the hook and I would reel the fish in. It was not until I was 5 years old I could wade by myself.

Q.  What made you decide to become a fly fishing guide?

A.  I wanted to get discounts on gear.

Q. Why did you decide to create the Flyfisher Guide Service?

A.  After guiding for a season, I could not understand why guiding pricing had decreased over the past 10 years. I realized that it was because the quality and wages of guides had decreased. Since I had been on many guided trips as a participant, I understood the importance of an excellent guide. It was my desire to create an opportunity where people can learn to fish as I had as a kid.

Q. What makes the Flyfisher Guide Service Unique?

A.  Our guides. We are unmatched in the industry in our guides’ attention to detail, appearance, customer service, behavior and skill.

Q.  Is the Flyfisher Guide Service tailored to any particular fly fishing skill level?

A.  FFGS is tailored to beginners as we have created a program where “never-ever” anglers can catch a fish very quickly. We also cater to anglers of all levels because our staff is highly trained and of the highest quality.

Q.  How do your group trips help company morale and bring people together?

A.  Fishing together creates a fish story and as time goes on, those stories grow in lore, dramatics and success. Spending time on the water with business associates, clients or staff allows the group to bond around an activity. A tale sewn among fishing buddies is a story that connects them forever. That connection allows for relationships to grow and bonds to build.

Q. How does fly fishing help people to rejuvenate and relax?

A.  The unique experience of standing in water, the rhythmic casting of a line, plus the total focus and attention it takes to be successful at fly fishing is what makes it so relaxing. Daily stresses must be put aside if you want to be successful and living in the moment.

Q.  What is entailed in the Apprentice Training Program?

A.  The apprentice program gives accomplished anglers who have not guided previously the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to be a guide. We teach you everything from where to stand, how to pace your day, to the equipment needed. We give you an opportunity to role-play guide, fish with guides and guide our clients in preparation for a final exam designed to give you the confidence and the belief that you will be successful every day.
